I think it only apropos to delve into sexual submission because that one issue is the link to many others. Notice Paul writes in Ephesians 5:22, Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. Why would he say ‘to your own husbands’? In order to understand this verse, you must first go back to Genesis 3:16 which says, “To the woman [God] said…your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”
God spoke that to Eve - the mother of all humans; so when He made this declaration, that went for every woman. With that in mind, look at Genesis 4:17, “Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.”
Lamech had two wives which meant they desired the same man and though he ‘ruled over’ both; in the eyes of God, he was only married to one. Therefore, that ‘one’ was supposed to submit to her ‘own husband'; which meant the second was submitted to someone else’s. Many of you have the same issue. Oh, you might not be in an adulterous relationship; but you’re definitely acting like a wife to someone that’s not your husband.
John 4: 16 – 18 says, ‘Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
Why did Jesus say ‘Go, call your husband’ and not ‘Go get your boo’? Because she’d gone beyond being boo-ed up; she’d lived as a wife with six men. How so? Well, what do husbands and wives do; live together and have sex, right? But what if the Lord told you to call yours? Oh you might not be shacked up, but your legs are definitely open. And by default, because they are; you’ve taken on the role of a wife and submitted yourself sexually – to every man and/or woman you've had sex with.
So why’d the Lord put her out there like that? It’s because He was giving her the opportunity to repent. In that moment, by telling the truth and admitting that she had no husband, she was essentially confessing her sins; and now by God’s grace, don't you think it's time for you to do the same?
Pray this with me: Heavenly Father, will You please forgive me for every time I’ve had sex with someone other than my husband (or wife for the men)? Lord I ask You to teach me how to submit my body to You and will You please give me the grace to live a life that’s submitted and sexually pure? In Jesus’ name.
