In our last issue, we discussed Jada Pinkett Smith’s alleged affair with August Alsina. Jada has since confirmed the allegations in a one-on-one Red Table Talk® interview with her husband, Will Smith. In it, she made the statement that she and Will “were going through a very difficult time” and had made the decision to divorce which meant they were separated at the time of the affair. That separation paved the way for what she described as “an entanglement” with August Alsina. Interestingly enough, when Will asked her the reason or what she felt like she was looking for, her response was that she “…just wanted to feel good”. When he used the phrase “looking for” coupled with Jada’s response of “feeling good”, it reminded me of David and Bathsheba.
Looking For Love In All The Wrong Faces
In 2 Samuel 11, we find King David on his balcony where he sees a woman sunbathing in her backyard. That woman was Uriah’s wife, a soldier who serves in his army. Because David liked what he saw, he wooed Bathsheba and the two had an affair resulting in a pregnancy; to which David tries to cover up by having Uriah come in from the battlefield; in hopes that he and his already impregnated wife would have sex so that he can cover up his adulterous tracks. Unfortunately, the plan fails. Uriah is murdered, and Bathsheba miscarries. And it is at this point where David’s and Jada’s feelings intersect.
Money, Power and Love
In 2 Samuel 12:7,8 God tells David, “…I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your keeping, and gaveyou the house of Israel and Judah. And if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more!” What God was essentially telling David, was that HE gave him everything.
He gave him his ‘masters house’ – ASSETS.
He also gave him his ‘masters wives’ – WOMEN, LOVE, and…
He’d given him ‘the house of Israel and Judah’ which is the same as POWER.
Basically, God was saying that if David needed more money, more power, or more love, excitement, affection, or attention, He would have given him that too. And that’s essentially what God is saying to Jada. If she felt like she wasn’t getting what she needed from Will as his woman and as his wife, then she should have come to Him. If she felt like she needed to feel good, she could have come to Him for that also. But God’s not only saying that to Jada, He’s saying that to us. Jada went outside her marriage for what she thought she needed when God was inside her the entire time. And all she, me, and you need to do is…just ask.
“Ask, and it will be given to you…for everyone who asks receives…”
Matthew 7:7,8
Asking For the Good
For those of us that have been living under pandemic-like conditions prior to this pandemic, all we need to do is ask God for enjoyment, for love, for whatever or for whoever we think we need. Because contrary to our thinking, nothing and nobody can ever give us what we truly need other than God. But I think what happens is that we tend to believe that we can’t ask God for ‘fun stuff’. It’s like we think we can’t ask Him to teach us how to turn up, get lit, or go in…for Jesus! We tend to limit that stuff for the world. And when we do decide we want to get some, we feel guilty and you know why? Because we did it our own way instead of asking God to show us how.
1 Timothy 6:17 says God, ‘…gives us richly all things to enjoy” and Ecclesiastes 5:18 even says, ‘It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor…all the days of his life which God gives him…’ That includes enjoying a good dinner, a good party, or in Jada’s case, a good marriage. Whatever or whoever we feel like isn’t making us feel good, all we need to do is ask God how to correct the situation or as Jada put it, “fix” us. Because remember: He gives us richly all things to enjoy. So, whether we need a good husband, a good wife, a good job, or a good time, all we have to do is ask. So…
Pray this with me: Heavenly Father, please forgive me for trying to fix and/or enjoy myself…without You. Please forgive me when I didn’t seek You to give me what and/or who I felt like I needed. Lord, I’m going to be very honest. I need a good _________ (fill in the blank). You said You give me richly all things to enjoy, so I look forward to a little excitement and enjoyment in the days to come. And Lord, thank You so much for teaching me how to enjoy You and thank You for being such a fun God. In Jesus’ name.
