Power Walks on the Water

This morning I saw something while reading John 6 that I had never seen before. I saw that not only does God heal our bodies, but He empowers them as well. In John 6:18, 19 we find the disciples traversing across the ocean under hurricane-like conditions, without Jesus. It says, ‘Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat…’ Oftentimes, when we read that, we tend to only focus on the miracle of the Lord walking on water. But there’s a natural side to this that we need to see.

Calculating Distance, Time, and Speed

Notice the verse says that Jesus was walking on the sea. We read that and think He must have only walked for a short time. But the scripture says, ‘they…rowed about three or four miles’, which means Jesus had to have walked at least three or four miles to meet them. Think about that for a moment. Jesus WALKED three or four miles on the sea. A slow walk takes at least 20 minutes which means the Lord walked - on water - for at least an hour and twenty minutes (20 minutes per mile x 4 miles). At least. It takes me at least 16 minutes to jog a mile. That’s a light jog at 4.0mph. But let’s say after mile one, His adrenaline kicked in and He power walked the rest of the way. That would bring His walk time down to at least one hour. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the conditions in which He walked.

Power Walking Conditions

A category 1 wind can get up to speeds of at least 74 to 95mph (miles per hour). That type of wind speed is known to cause minor damage to trees and structures, such as houses and buildings. To give you an idea of how fast that is, the world’s fastest car, the Lykan Fenyr SuperSport, can go from 0 to 60mph in 2.7 seconds. That’s just how fast these winds were coming at Jesus. Coupled with the fast that these winds were whipping through the water on which the Lord was walking, you can better see what the Lord was up against. When you put everything into perspective that means the Lord power walked three to four miles on water against 74 mile per hour winds for at least an hour. Let me say that again. The Lord power walked three to four miles on water against 74 mile per hour winds for at least an hour. The fact that He walked on water was miraculous within itself. But the physical strength it took to do it is another miracle.

You Got This!

You may have some physical challenges, be disabled or even paralyzed but know that the same empowerment God gave Jesus, He’s given to you. You may even feel a little weak today or you just may not feel like working out but know that the same strength Jesus used to power walk four miles against 74 mile per hour winds is available to you. You need only ask! So…

Pray this with me: Heavenly Father, I ask You to give me the same strength You gave Jesus to power walk on the water. Lord, Your Word says let the weak say that I am strong, so Lord I thank You that I am strong and I thank You for strength to do what my mind is telling me not to and empowering my body to do what it’s saying can’t be done. In Jesus’ name.
