Real Issue of the Day: 'I'm too old to do that!'
Reference Scripture: Hebrews 11:11, 'By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.'
Ordinarily, when you read that scripture, you think, ‘Okay, by faith.’ But what does that look like? It means that not only did Sarah believe, confess, and make daily affirmations that she was going to have a baby, but she did what was necessary to ensure that it happened. How? In today's vernacular it would be equivalent to eating organic, eliminating processed foods, drinking filtered water, and exercising. But here’s the thing. She didn’t get started until she was about 65. Yep, beyond early retirement. Sarah did what was necessary to ensure she received what God promised. And if you’re in your 40’s or over 65, the same is true for you.
Working Your Faith
Oftentimes as Christians, we toss the word faith around haphazardly. We say things like, ‘I decree and declare’ or ‘I’m walking by faith’; like that’s all its going to take. And unfortunately, we walk in circles; never going anywhere or receiving anything. But ‘faith without works is dead’. Meaning not only should we decree, but we’ve got to put in the work; even in retirement. It wasn’t until after Sarah retired, that she started to take care of herself. In fact, she started her workout regimen in her mid-60’s and continued until she hit 90; the time she actually conceived. Which means that even in her 70’s and 80’s she took care of herself by exercising, eating right, and making daily confessions. By doing so, this allowed God to renew her youth, reverse the signs of aging and give life to her once dead reproductive system. But what does that mean for you?
Never Too Old to Produce
Some of you believe that you’re too old to change careers, start that business, go to college, get married, have a child, write a book, do music, get off the streets, off the pole, off them narcotics (in my Ike Turner voice) or become a productive citizen. But like Sarah, you’re never too old to produce. While her girlfriends were having baby showers, birthday parties, and looking pitifully at her unproductive life, Sarah never let go of her desire to have a child; even though circumstances and time told her otherwise. Though you’ve been unproductive and unprofitable in the past, it’s time to birth the promise. Sarah did. She too was ‘past the age’ that doctors and science said it was possible to conceive. But guess what? She did it anyway and so can you!
Romans 8:11 says, ‘But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.’ Raised in the Greek means, ‘to waken or arouse from disease, inactivity, nonexistence, and/or obscurity.’ That dead business idea, dead part of your body, or dead dream that you had, God’s raising that thing up again. So, get ready. It’s your time and you’re not too old. You’re about to birth that business, house, marriage, book, career or whatever you thought you were too old to do. All you need to do is receive the strength and do the work required to bring that thing into existence.
Pray this with me: Heavenly Father, I thought I was too old to ________________________. But Lord I ask You for the strength to conceive and produce what You’ve shown me. Help me to renew my mind and get those infertile and unproductive thoughts and experiences out of my head. I open myself up to Your possibilities; even though the world, science and time says that I’m past the age. I realize I'm never too old to grow, learn and do new things in and for You. In Jesus’ name.
Ways to Get Started
A great way to get started is to sow into the life of someone dealing with the same issue. In fact, why not help the homeless do the same? Have you ever noticed that the majority of homeless people are older adults? Why is that? Well, I address this in my latest self-published book entitled the 'Do-It-Yourself Guide out of Homelessness'. By helping in our efforts to self-publish, you can ensure this book gets into the hands of someone who's not only homeless, but thinks it's too late for them to have a place of their own. Find out how yo can help.
