Waiting Without a Promise

For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself.” Hebrews 6:13

My Pastor taught on this scripture and though I’ve read it over and over, after he taught on it, I saw it in a different light. He said that faith doesn’t start until God makes a promise. When I heard that, I saw that I’ve been waiting on things - without His promise. Therefore, without it, I’ve been waiting in vain. Why? Because it was something I wanted; not something God promised to give.

Prior to being under my new Pastor, I’d been taught incorrectly and maybe you were too. I was taught that you find a scripture that says God will do what you’re believing for and then you stand on it. You confess it, you declare it, you sow for it and you wait. And though there’s some truth to that; it doesn’t quite work that way. The correct way is that God, by His Holy Spirit, will quicken a scripture, a Word to you and that’s when you start confessing, declaring, sowing, and waiting. We were missing a very important step and that’s getting it from God FIRST and not from ourselves.

And if you think about it; how much have you actually received by doing it that way? Nine times out of ten, not much and it’s because we were doing it out of order; which led us to believe that the reason it hadn't happened was because we were waiting on God; when in reality – it wasn't something we were supposed to be believing for in the first place.

A perfect example of this is in Genesis 15:1, 2, 4 which says “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” 2 But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”…4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.”

Abraham had been wanting and waited for almost 60 years for a child - without a promise from God. It didn’t become possible until God gave him one. What about you? Think about all the things, goals, dreams, and ideas you’ve been waiting on. Did that come from you or God?

Pray this with me: Heavenly Father, I need Your help. There are some things, people, dreams, and ideas that I thought were from You and a whole lot of stuff that I just wanted. Lord, please help me to get clear. Show me what You want for me; what You’ve promised me, what I should be believing You for; instead of all the other stuff I made up. In Jesus’ name.
